Online learning is convenient for reading, working with terminology and independent revision. However, an ecologist needs professional English not only to recognise a word in an article. A term may have to be heard, pronounced correctly, used in a question, included in a short presentation and sometimes explained to another person in different words.
For this reason, in-person language practice can be a useful addition to this course.
It is not necessary to look specifically for a programme called English for Ecologists. Such programmes are uncommon. It is more important to find an active place where you can regularly speak English, listen to other participants, receive feedback and gradually bring the ecological vocabulary from this course into live communication.

This is not an outdated description of a project that existed only in the past. In June 2026, American Corner Shymkent held an event with a diplomat from the U.S. Embassy, and local sources reported other activities of the centre during 2026.
The current activity of the venue is also confirmed by the author's personal experience: in 2026, the author of this course attended American Corner Shymkent twice.
For an ecologist, the main value of such a place is a live language environment. Even when a particular meeting is not about ecology, it can be used to practise the vocabulary needed in this course.
For example, before attending a meeting, you can select five terms from the course:
biodiversity
urban vegetation
green infrastructure
air pollution
human health
The aim at the meeting is not simply to remember the translation, but to use at least several of these terms independently.
You can prepare two or three short sentences in advance:
Urban vegetation can reduce heat in cities.

Academic English at Nazarbayev University
For people who need English mainly for scientific articles, Master's programmes, PhD studies, research and professional presentations, the Academic English Courses at Nazarbayev University are especially relevant.
In 2026, the Center for Preparatory Studies reports open registration for new courses. The format is in person on the NU campus, one course lasts 12 weeks, and classes are held on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Levels are offered for approximately IELTS 5.0 to 6.0. Nazarbayev University: Academic English Courses
Academic English is particularly useful for ecologists because scientific language differs from everyday speech.
It is important to understand the difference between:
causes — вызывает;
is associated with — связано с;
may increase — может повышать;
is likely to affect — вероятно, влияет;
evidence suggests — данные позволяют предположить.
In a scientific publication, these differences are fundamental. A cautious statement such as may be associated with should not automatically be turned into the categorical statement “causes”.
Academic English therefore complements this course in areas where an ordinary speaking club is no longer enough: reading research, writing scientific texts, preparing presentations and discussing results.
Kazakh-English Speaking Club at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University
An interesting new option appeared in Almaty in 2026.
On 14 April 2026, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University launched a free Kazakh-English Speaking Club. The project was created to develop spoken Kazakh and English, expand vocabulary and support intercultural communication.

At the same time, a broader format called The Polaris Club — Kazakh-English Speaking Community was introduced. Its programme includes weekly speaking sessions, open discussions, debates, role-playing activities, book reading, workshops on presentations and leadership skills, project work and meetings with international students.
This option is particularly interesting for our course because it combines қазақша and English.
The familiar language can be used as a bridge:

мекен ету ортасы → habitat
қоршаған орта → environment
In other words, a familiar Kazakh ecological term can support the active use of its English equivalent.
Before attending, it is sensible to check whether people who are not students of the relevant faculty can participate, although the published announcement also invites people who wish to join the community.
American Corner Almaty
American Corner is also active in Almaty in 2026.
Its current activity can be seen from schedules and event announcements published during August 2026, including free English-language meetings and workshops. For example, a workshop about National Parks was held on 20 August, and an English-language meeting about New York State was announced for 27 August.
For an ecologist, the principle of thematic meetings is especially useful.
Even a session about national parks creates an opportunity to use vocabulary such as:

habitat
landscape
conservation
biodiversity
ecosystem
This is more useful than simply memorising a list of words because the terminology immediately appears inside a meaningful topic and becomes connected with real objects and situations.
Toastmasters: when English is needed for conferences
Scientific work requires more than reading.
An ecologist may need to present a project, explain a study briefly, speak at a conference, ask a question after a presentation, respond to a comment, or explain a graph or table.
The Toastmasters format can be useful for these tasks.
The official Toastmasters website lists active in-person clubs in Kazakhstan.
Astana Toastmasters Club meets on Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:30. Interested visitors are welcome.
Almaty Toastmasters meets on Wednesdays at 19:30 at KIMEP University and is also open to interested visitors.
Qazaq Toastmasters also operates in Almaty, with meetings on Fridays at 19:30. Official Toastmasters information for 2026 shows both Almaty Toastmasters and Qazaq Toastmasters as active clubs attracting new members.
Toastmasters is not a course in ecological English. Its value is different: it pushes passive vocabulary into public speech.
Instead of choosing a random topic, an ecologist can prepare a short presentation such as:

Even a three-minute speech requires the speaker to retrieve from memory dozens of words that could be recognised passively during ordinary reading.

The most expensive language school is not necessarily the most useful option for an ecologist.
The main question should not be:
“How many levels of English does this school offer?”
but:
“How much time will I personally spend speaking here, and will I be able to use my own professional vocabulary?”
How to turn a general Speaking Club into professional practice
Before each in-person meeting, you can take a small set of terms from this course.

Then make three or four sentences with them.
The next level is to explain a term without translating it.
Biodiversity means the variety of living organisms in an area.
Or:

You do not need to understand every word your partner says

In-person learning and this course perform different functions
This course provides a calm environment for reading.
You can stop, open a double tooltip, compare English with қазақша and русский, return to the previous sentence and read a new term several times.
In live conversation, there is no time for this.
That is why the two formats complement each other well.
In Stepik:
English → term → қазақша / русский → understanding.
In a speaking club:
understanding → recall → English → pronunciation → your own sentence.
In Academic English:
term → scientific sentence → paragraph → argument → article or presentation.
In Toastmasters:
knowledge → public explanation → audience question → answer.
The main task
The goal of this course is not to make a learner “know the whole English language”.
For an ecologist, a much more realistic goal is to turn several hundred of the most useful English ecological terms from unfamiliar symbols into working professional vocabulary.
Reading alone is not enough for this.
A word goes through several stages:
see it → understand it → recognise it again → recall it → pronounce it → use it → explain it to another person.
Double tooltips are especially useful in the first three stages.
In-person classes are especially valuable in the last four.
The best approach is therefore not to choose between an online course and live practice, but to combine them: take ecological vocabulary from this course and use it wherever you have to speak with real people.
